PhD Studentship in Design of an optimisation algorithm using courtship concepts to overcome challenges in logistics applications.

Business operations managers regularly face various logistical combinatorial problems, including fleet management, human resources planning and facility location selection. In the literature, these problems are known to be NP-hard, which means that there is no exact algorithm to solve them in polynomial time. Meta-heuristics have emerged as popular solving strategies as they do not investigate the entire space of possible solutions but navigate in a tactical manner through particular subsets in order to find a near-optimal solution. While not guaranteeing optimality, they provide good solutions within short computational times. The majority of meta-heuristic strategies have been inspired by natural science areas such as Darwin's 'survival of the fittest' for Genetic Algorithms or bird flocking behaviour for Particle Swarm optimisation.

The project aims to develop a new analogy which is based on courtship strategies in nature. The goal is to translate behavioural strategies, which are following different objectives, into an algorithm that can generate potential good solutions in a complex logistics problem environment. The new design should strongly focus on the applicability in practice, for example, by reducing algorithm-specific parameters in order to facilitate the algorithmic calibration which is proven to be a challenge for any practitioner using meta-heuristics.
The concept is planned to be validated in a range of logistics applications.

PhD Studentship in Innovation Management

Measurement of the process of innovation is critical for both practitioners and academics, yet the literature is characterized by a diversity of approaches, prescriptions and practices that can be con- fusing and contradictory. Many of the studies of innovation management have disaggregated the process into separate studies. The consequence of this is the absence of a holistic framework covering the range of activities required to turn ideas into useful marketable products. Efficient innovation management requires a proper understanding of the set of factors influencing its improvement, as well as relevant metrics to quantify and evaluate the resulting impact.
Several metrics and methods to measure firm technology innovative capabilities (TIC) have been developed in recent years. Those methods based mainly on multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) techniques. At a company level, the availability of an innovation measurement framework will enable firms to organize technology-related resources to establish a competitive strategy. At the policy and sector levels it will provide the ability to benchmark the innovation capability of a set of companies and also to define categories taking into account firm innovativeness. Beyond metrics and classifications, which provide quantitative results, this research will also add a qualitative level for improvement recommendations to companies and policy makers.

This PhD is part of a larger research collaboration programme with the University of Lorraine in Nancy (France).The focus in this work will be given to companies in South England.
