[DMANET] Senior Lecturer/Chair in OR at Lancaster

Senior Lecturer/Chair in Operations Research (Ref: A1318)

We wish to make a senior appointment in Operations Research. You will have expertise in a range of areas connected with Operations Research that include mathematical methods, algorithm development, and real world applications. You will work with research groups within the Department to strengthen the Department's research agenda in Operations Research. We encourage cooperation with the recently established Centre for Transportation and Logistics (CENTRAL). You will also develop a research agenda involving outside organisations and seek opportunities for collaboration with other Lancaster departments with interests in this area (e.g. Computing and Maths & Stats, Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business).

Potential research interests may include:
• Mathematical methods of Operations Research
• Optimization in logistics, routing, location and supply chains
• Operations Research and sustainability, e.g. green logistics
• A substantive interest in a knowledge transfer to industry

A desirable quality in the successful candidate would be the ability to envision how new technology and the emerging area of data science can inform operations research methods in the solution of organizational problems. You will also contribute to the new undergraduate programme in Business Analytics and Consultancy and the Masters programmes in Management Science and Operations Research/Logistics and Supply Chain Management and engage with the STOR-i Centre for Doctoral Training.

Candidates should have a relevant PhD, a publication record that demonstrates international excellence and experience of effective organizational engagement.

A Spring School will be organized before the conference, on May 16-17 in

THEME AND SCOPE
ISCO is a biannual symposium whose aim is to bring together researchers
from all the communities related to combinatorial optimization,
including algorithms and complexity, mathematical programming and
operations research. It is intended to be a forum for presenting
original research in these areas and especially in their intersections.
Quality papers on all aspects of combinatorial optimization, from
mathematical foundations and theory of algorithms to computational
studies and practical applications, are solicited.

SESSIONS
The conference is organized into plenary and parallel sessions. The
conference language is English.
Each speaker can give only one talk.

Warsaw. The Reachability Workshop is specifically aimed at gathering together
scholars from diverse disciplines interested in reachability problems that appear in

which has not yet been submitted. These contributions will be judged
solely on the basis of their attractiveness to the workshop.

To apply to give such a presentation please submit a PDF file containing a
short abstract (up to two pages) by e-mail [ rp2...@easychair.org ] by
August 4th 2015, with subject "RP2015 Presentation-Only Track". This abstract
will not be published in the conference proceedings.
Notification for the presentation-only track will be August 11th 2015.

Special Issue on "Understanding Complexity in Multiobjective Optimization"

This special issue of JMCDA is devoted to further strengthen the links
between the Evolutionary
Multiobjective Optimization (EMO) and Multiple Criteria Decision Making
(MCDM) communities, and to
advance our understanding of different aspects concerning complexity in
multiobjective optimization.

The need for a better understanding of complexity is pressing and timely as
recent work has sometimes
shown opposing views regarding how problems scale and grow in difficulty,
and their inherent
challenges. On the one hand, we know that multiobjective optimization
problems are complex problems
by their very nature. For example optimization problems that are easy to
solve in the single objective case are often
intractable and highly complex already in the biobjective case, and
further fundamental limitations in multiobjective optimization are apparent
as we scale up to many objectives.
On the other hand, a multiobjective perspective can in a sense also help
reduce complexity. For example,
it often leads to a better understanding of a problem and hence supports
the decision making process.
And adding objectives to a problem does not always make it harder, because
decomposing it can
reduce the presence of local optima, for example. From the MCDM point of
view, we observe that
there is an intrinsic complexity in the process of
understanding the optimization problem and building preferences on the
solutions proposed by the
multiobjective optimization. At the beginning of the decision process the
Decision Maker (DM) has a
rather vague idea of the decision problem at hand and, consequently, also
the preferences are
incomplete, approximate, uncertain or fuzzy.

Taking into account the above remarks, complexity in multiobjective
optimization, as the main theme of the special
issue, will be focused around three topics:

Focus 1: Complexity in preference
This topic is mainly concerned with elicitation, representation and
exploitation of the preference of one
or more users, for example: discovering and building preferences that are
dynamic and unstable, group
preference, complex structure of criteria, non-standard preferences,
learning in multiobjective
optimization.

Focus 2: Complexity in optimization
This topic is mainly concerned with the generation of alternative candidate
solutions, given some set of
objective functions and feasible space. The following topics are examples
for the wide range of issues in
this context: high-dimensional problems, complex optimization problems,
simulation-based optimization
and expensive functions, uncertainty and robustness, interrelating decision
and objective space
information.

Focus 3: Complexity in applications
An all-embracing goal is to achieve a better understanding of complexity in
practical problems. Many
fields in the Social Sciences, Economics, Engineering Sciences are
relevant: E-government, Finance,
Environmental Assessment, E-commerce, Public Policy Evaluation, Risk
Management and Security issues
are among the possible application areas.

These three topics will provide a strong basis for progress in both the
theory and practice of handling
complexity in multiobjective optimization in all its guises.

Submissions are now invited for this special issue, which will be subject
to the standard review processes
of the journal. Contributions should be submitted online at

[DMANET] Post-doctoral position in Extremal Combinatorics at Warwick

For a project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council (EPSRC) and the European Research Council (ERC), we are
seeking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work in
Extremal Combinatorics under supervision of Prof Oleg Pikhurko.

There are a few possible directions to explore under this broad project:

1. Asymptotic extremal problems for graphs and k-uniform hypergraphs
(such as, for example, the Turan function and Ramsey theory).

2. Limits of discrete structures and, more generally, applications of
probabilistic, analytic, or algebraic methods to discrete problems.

3. Developing software for flag algebra computations.

The successful applicant should demonstrate a strong potential to make
a substantial contribution to at least one of the above directions.

The starting date for this position can be any date between 1 October
2015 and 1 May 2016. Applicants have to submit their CV and research

Distributed Algorithms (BDA). BDA is focused on the relationships
between distributed computing and distributed biological systems and
in particular, on analysis and case studies that combine the two. Such

computing problems.

[DMANET] Postdoc position on Theory of Evolutionary Computation and Population Genetics

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield is
offering a Postdoc position on Theory of Evolutionary Computation and
Population Genetics


A Research Assistant or Research Fellow position is available to work on
analysing the efficiency of evolutionary processes in evolutionary
algorithms and models of natural evolution. The position is part of SAGE
(Speed of Adaptation in Population Genetics and Evolutionary Algorithms,
http://www.project-sage.eu/), an interdisciplinary European project in
the Future and Emerging Technologies scheme. This is a fixed term post,
starting Sep 1st 2015 (negotiable) and ending on Dec 31st 2016. It is
based in the Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield,
and reports to Dr Dirk Sudholt.

SAGE is a joint effort between four European research
institutions--University of Nottingham, University of Sheffield, Hasso
Plattner Institute Potsdam, and IST Austria--to develop world-leading
research at the interface between Population Genetics and Computer
Science. Specifically, SAGE aims at bringing together these two research
fields to develop a unified quantitative theory that describes how
quickly populations adapt to evolve high-fitness individuals in both
natural and artificial evolution. Our goal is to reveal how this
efficiency is fundamentally determined by evolutionary and environmental
parameters, and how these parameters can be tuned to use evolution most
effectively in applications ranging from evolutionary algorithms to
experimental evolution and synthetic biology. The successful candidate
will join a growing team of young and ambitious researchers that has
already made excellent progress towards achieving these goals.

Applications are invited from highly skilled researchers in Computer
Science, Mathematics, Physics, Theoretical Biology or related areas (at
the interface between computer science and biology). A good
understanding of evolutionary computation and/or population genetics
will be an advantage. In addition, strong mathematical and analytical
skills are essential. The applicants must have (or be very close to
completing) a PhD in Computer Science, Biology, Mathematics, Physics or
related disciplines.

The Series on Adhoc and Sensor Networks of the IEEE Communications Magazine intends to provide the latest developments in this very rich and exciting domain. The Series explores in depth the concept of ad hoc and sensor networking, highlighting the recent research achievements in the field, and also providing insight into theoretical and practical issues related to the development of these networks from different perspectives. This series offers a relevant forum for both academic and industrial research, covering, at the same time, the theory, the practice and the state of the art of ad hoc and sensor networking.

The special focus of this FT aims to explore the ad hoc and sensor networks research and development related to social and mobile solutions: communications, applications, algorithms and systems as well as services and computing. Thus, we are interested in articles that involve people, networked sensors, mobile phones and/or sensing context, how they interact and how they perform.

Dénes König Prize

The SIAM Activity Group on Discrete Mathematics (SIAG/DM) will award
the Dénes König Prize at the SIAM Conference on Discrete Mathematics
(DM16), to be held June 6-10. 2016, at Georgia State University in
Atlanta, Georgia.

The prize, established in 2007, is awarded biennially to a junior
researcher or junior researchers for outstanding research, as
determined by the prize committee, in an area of discrete mathematics,
based on a publication by the candidate(s) in English in a
peer-reviewed journal published in the three calendar years prior to
the year of the award.

The term "discrete mathematics" is used in the spirit of the SIAG/DM
website, http://www.siam.org/activity/dm, and includes combinatorics,
graph theory, cryptography, discrete optimization, mathematical
programming, coding theory, information theory, game theory, and
theoretical computer science.

Eligibility

The paper by the candidate(s) must be published in English in a
peer-reviewed journal bearing a publication date within the three
calendar years prior to the year of the award. For the 2016 award, the
eligibility period is January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2015. Each
candidate must be a PhD student or, at the time of the award, be
within four years after completing a PhD.

Description of the Award

Each awardee will receive a plaque. There will be a cash award of
$1,000, which will be shared if there are multiple recipients. At
least one of the awardees is expected to attend the award ceremony and
to present the paper at the conference. Travel funds will be made
available to reimburse one recipient for reasonable travel expenses
incurred in attending the award ceremony and presenting the paper.

Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs and
constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph Drawing and
Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to
visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such
application areas include social sciences, Internet and Web computing,
information systems, computational biology, networking, VLSI circuit
design,
and software engineering.

The International Symposium on Graph Drawing has been the main annual event
in this area for more than twenty years. This year the Steering
Committee of
GD decided to extend the name of the conference from the "International
Symposium on Graph Drawing" to the "International Symposium on Graph
Drawing
and Network Visualization" in order to better emphasize the dual focus of
the conference on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects as well as the
design
of network visualization systems and interfaces.

The conference will be hosted by the California State University at
Northridge,
in Los Angeles, CA, from September 24 to 26, 2015. Researchers and
practitioners
working on any aspect of graph drawing and network visualization are

in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster.
Abstracts of
accepted posters will appear in the conference proceedings (two pages),
but will
not be made available for indexing. The maximum size for a poster is A0
(84.1 cm x 118.9 cm). The posters must be in portrait mode.

POSTER SUBMISSION

Each submission consists of two pdf files (the two-page abstract and the
poster)
and must include names, email addresses and contact information of the
contributors.
Contributions should be submitted via the conference web site.

BEST POSTER AWARD
-----------------

To recognize the effort of participants in preparing and presenting
